Empowering the Next Generation: How ITAVAC Supports Education in Liberia and Brooklyn
At It Takes A Village Africa, we believe that education is not just a pathway out of poverty—it’s a foundation for lasting change. That’s why one of our core missions is to support and expand educational opportunities for under-served communities in both Brooklyn, and Liberia. Though worlds apart, these communities share a common thread: a hunger for knowledge and a determination to overcome barriers.
Education in Brooklyn: Uplifting Local Youth
In Brooklyn, systemic inequities have left many students without the resources they need to succeed. Our nonprofit partners with local schools, after-school programs, and community centers to close this gap by providing:
Tutoring and Mentorship: We connect students with volunteers who offer academic support and personal guidance, helping them build confidence in the classroom and beyond.
School Supplies Drives: Each year, we distribute hundreds of backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, and other essential supplies to ensure students start the school year prepared.
Workshops and Enrichment Programs: From STEM bootcamps to creative writing classes, we offer workshops that inspire curiosity and critical thinking.
Our aim is not only to boost academic performance but also to help young people see the possibilities for their future—and give them the tools to get there.
Education in Liberia: Rebuilding with Hope
In Liberia, years of civil conflict and economic hardship have severely impacted the education system. Many children still lack access to basic learning materials, and schools are often under-resourced. That’s where we come in:
School Renovations and Construction: We help build and restore schools in rural areas, ensuring students have safe, functional spaces to learn.
Scholarships and Tuition Assistance: Through our scholarship fund, we support students who would otherwise be unable to attend school, especially girls and children from low-income families.
Teacher Training and Resources: We provide professional development and materials to local educators, empowering them to deliver a higher quality of instruction.
Our work in Liberia is rooted in long-term community partnership. We listen to what local leaders and families need and co-create sustainable solutions that allow children to thrive.
Why Education?
Because when a child learns to read, do math, or understand science, they gain more than knowledge—they gain agency. They gain the ability to dream, to solve problems, and to change their world.
